spacing between strands on hoist ropes

NOEL A ROSTRON just looking for some feedback, I was inspecting a new installation and noticed that there was spacing between the strands of the hoist cables that was exposing the hemp core. i informed the company that they should be replaced and they are arguing that the hoist ropes are fine and don't need to be replaced. I'm referencing ASME A17.6, 1.5.1 on Hoist Rope Standards. anyone else encounter this?
Steven L Stuard I would call the cable manufacturer. Perhaps sending pictures.
NOEL A ROSTRON that's our next course of action thanks Steven
Matthew A Pike Noel,
I would use 1.5.2.1 If it was poorly constructed and 1.10.1.1 for a damaged rope that is showing the core. Either way the the deformity is what is driving the replacement.
Chris E Strawn For non-compliance, note the rule number and take a picture. Have them follow up with manufacture. As the inspector, you not required to prove one side or the other. The installer says they are compliant, the inspector is there to verify what they say is correct or not.. Granted, this is odd for a new install, and it likely means they twisted the ropes during installation. Good Eye!
Jack S Day Noel, all great comments to your question. I am curious if this is a manufacturer's defect 1.5.2.1 or improper installation 1.10.1.1. Great catch.
NOEL A ROSTRON we're waiting to hear back from the manufacture ill keep everyone posted. As for now the elevator stays shut down.
James L Borwey Noel, Leaving the elevator shut down is the correct call.
NOEL A ROSTRON quick update the cable manufacturing company did a site inspection and determined that it was normal behavior for their hoist ropes and put it in writing
