John T Mitchell Can an access key switch located on floor X move a car that is not adjacent to floor X when the hall doors are not open.
Richard Blaska Interesting questions - I think I know where you are going with this. In the 1980s a controller and dispatch overlay manufacturer, Mike Salish (don't remember the name of his company) included in his control logic a unique function for obtaining a car out of a group, using the hoistway access switches. When attempting to access a pit or car top of a particular elevator out of a group, we are all familiar with the process - place a hall call, wait for a car to arrive, if it isn't the car you want, you place a bunch of car calls (possibly defeated by anti-nuisance), sending that car away and then placing another hall call, repeating the process until you finally get the car you want. What Mike did was to simply make the actuation of a hoistway access key switch (either UP or DOWN) place a car call for that elevator for the landing where the key switch was actuated. This worked because the in-car Access/Inspection switch was not Enabled, an easy logic test for the controller to make, affecting the car call function.

I do not see anything in 2.12.7 or 2.26.1.4 that would prohibit this operation. Does anyone else? Is this allowed under ASME A17.1-2019 / CSA B44:19? Is anyone currently providing this operation? If not, why not?
Mark Kinnaird Recently inspected some newer fujitecs at a busy hospital and they had this exact feature. After using it and seeing the practicality of it I wish they all had this feature.
John W Koshak Westinghouse had this feature in the 1980's, not sure why it was stopped except due to cost and possible failure causing the car to run due to a backfeed wiring problem. With the new Code requiring Hoistway Access and the switch having specific positive acting characteristics, it is most likely there would have to be a separate independent switches to perform this function. Could be done easily. Suggesting this to the Hoistway Committee to make it a requirement could be done by anyone to have it required by Code.
