I think I read somewhere that Elastomeric coated steel belts had to be ultrasonically tested as part of a Cat 5. Is this true? Thanks |

Hi Bryan, via A17.1 section 8.6.4.19, the elastomeric suspension means tested under category one. See 8.6.4.19.13 Broken-Suspension-Member and Residual Strength Detection Means. When these elastomeric suspension means were first introduced via a variance process (pre-2010), a manufacturer utilized ultrasonic testing, and soon the same manufacturer replaced that testing process with a monitoring device. Today, each manufacturer has the means to test their elastomeric suspension means, and everyone should be able to locate the testing means for their product via 8.6.1.2.2 On-Site Documentation. Expressly as stated in (5), procedures for tests, periodic inspections, maintenance, replacements, adjustments, and repairs for traction loss detection means, broken-suspension-member detection means, residual-strength detection means, and related circuits. If the document states to use ultrasound, then ultrasound it shall be. But more than likely, a monitoring device should have been installed to replace the ultrasound method. Let me know if you have any further questions. Jack Day |
